Scholarships to support graduate studies projects or undergraduate internships in data science and artificial intelligence at Université Laval
The Intelligence and Data Institute (IID) is offering five scholarships to students supervised (directly or jointly) by an IID research member. The scholarships are intended to support and encourage graduate studies (master’s, doctoral) and undergraduate internships in fields related to artificial intelligence (AI) and data science at Université Laval.

Undergraduate research scholarship in artificial intelligence
Objective
Enable students enrolled in an undergraduate program at a Quebec university to complete a summer internship to gain research experience in artificial intelligence/data science.
Amount
$4,500 scholarship, accompanied by a contribution from the supervisor of at least $4,500 for the duration of the internship (number of scholarships varies).

Undergraduate: first-cycle students at a Quebec university (all programs)
Frequency
Offered annually (subject to availability of funds)
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the Undergraduate AI Research Scholarship, students must:
- Be enrolled full-time (or be “deemed full-time”) in the winter 2026 semester in an undergraduate program relevant to artificial intelligence or data science
- Not have undertaken, at any time before or during the internship, a graduate program
- Have already successfully completed 12 credits at a Quebec university and paid the tuition fees
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.30 out of 4.33
- Have completed and submitted an application for a CRSNG-IRSC/SSHRC undergraduate research grant, or complete the application and demonstrate that it was not possible to apply to these grant programs (e.g., international students)
- Plan to complete a summer internship in the field of artificial intelligence or data science for a minimum of 14-16 consecutive weeks, full-time (35 hours/week), between May 1 and August 31, 2026
- Not work full-time in another job during this period
- Be supervised or co-supervised by a professor active in artificial intelligence or data science who is a regular research member of the Institute for Intelligence and Data (IID) and who provides additional financial support to the research scholarship
Please note that students with visiting student status are not eligible for this scholarship.
This scholarship cannot be combined with NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC Undergraduate Research Scholarships). Applicants must submit their application to NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC and must accept it as their first choice.
If the application has not been submitted to NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC, please explain why this has not been done.
Selection criteria
- Quality of the application (academic excellence and research aptitude)
- Quality and relevance of the research internship project
- Relevance of the research topic to the IID’s programming or areas of focus
Submitting your application
You must complete the online form for the BRPC-NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC scholarship and attach the following documents:
- A copy of your NSERC (form 202)/CIHR/SSHRC scholarship application form and, if the application could not be submitted, proof that it was not possible to apply to these scholarship programs (e.g., international students)
- University transcripts, including the most recent one
- Detailed curriculum vitae
- Description of the research internship project (1 page)
- Letter from the supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular researcher member of the IID supporting the student’s application and certifying the commitment to provide a supplementary scholarship of $4,500 (minimum) to the student during their internship and (if necessary) justifying why the application was not submitted to NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC
If you have “full-time” status as a student parent, you must upload the certificate from the Registrar’s Office obtained for this purpose in the appropriate section of the form. Please note that it may take up to seven business days to obtain this document.
Important note
International students enrolled in an undergraduate program at a Quebec university are eligible for this scholarship. To apply, they must complete (but not submit) an application to the NSERC (form 202) / CIHR / SSHRC and send it to the Intelligence and Data Institute along with the other documents listed in the “Submitting your application” section.
The applicant authorizes the faculty representative of their faculty at their Quebec university to provide their name and NSERC/CIHR application file to the Intelligence and Data Institute in order to be considered for the Intelligence and Data Institute’s undergraduate research scholarship in artificial intelligence – Summer 2026 internship.
Ph.D. admission scholarship in artificial intelligence
Objective
To offer a one-year financial supplement to students from outside Quebec to begin or continue graduate studies in a field involving artificial intelligence or data science.
Amount
Grants of $7,000 (number of grants varies).

March 31, 2026 (summer-fall 2026-winter 2027)
Eligible students
Graduate students (all programs)
Frequency
Offered annually, subject to availability of funds.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:
- Have completed their previous degree (graduate level) at an institution other than Université Laval
- Be enrolled full-time (or be “deemed full-time”) in a graduate program relevant to artificial intelligence or data science during the scholarship’s period of validity
- October 14, 2025: first enrollment in a graduate program between January and December 2026 (winter-summer-fall 2026 sessions)
- March 31, 2026: first enrollment in the graduate program between May 2026 and January 2027 (summer-fall 2026-winter 2027 sessions)
- Be supervised or co-supervised by a professor active in artificial intelligence or data science who is a regular research member of the Intelligence and Data Institute
- Receive financial support of at least $19,000 per year from grants from the supervisor or co-supervisor, excellence scholarships, or any other external support sufficient to cover standard living expenses
Please note that students with visiting student status are not eligible for this scholarship.
Selection criteria
- Quality of the application (academic excellence, research aptitude, and research topic in line with the Institute’s focus on intelligence and data)
- Provide a copy of your previous degree, indicating that your graduate studies were completed elsewhere than at Université Laval
Comments
- The purpose of the scholarship is to supplement, not replace, the funding usually provided by the supervisor or by merit-based scholarships
- One of the conditions for obtaining the scholarship is to demonstrate satisfactorily that the scholarship is essential for undertaking or continuing graduate studies in artificial intelligence or data science
- The review committee may request additional verification and clarification to establish the applicant’s financial situation.

Solidarity scholarship (3 sessions) for graduate studies in artificial intelligence
Objective
To provide students with one year of financial support to begin or continue graduate studies in a field involving artificial intelligence or data science. Priority will be given to students facing special circumstances (e.g., returning to school, dependents) where the scholarship would have a significant impact on their ability to begin or continue graduate studies in artificial intelligence or data science.
Amount
Grants of $7,000 (number of grants varies).

Eligible students
Graduate and postgraduate students (all programs)
Frequency
Two scholarships offered annually, subject to availability of funds
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:
- Not have previously received the Solidarity Scholarship for Graduate Studies in AI during a previous semester/year
- Be enrolled full-time (or be “deemed full-time”) in a graduate program relevant to artificial intelligence or data science
- Be supervised or co-supervised by a professor active in artificial intelligence or data science who is a regular research member of the Institute for Intelligence and Data
- Receive financial support of at least $15,000 per year for a Me. student, or at least $19,000 per year for a Ph.D. student, from grants from the supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular researcher member of the IID, from excellence scholarships or any other external support sufficient to cover usual living expenses
- Demonstrate a special situation (e.g., return to school, dependents) that makes basic financial support insufficient to undertake or continue the full-time study program.
Please note that students with visiting student status are not eligible for this scholarship.
Selection criteria
- Demonstration of financial need arising from the specific situation
- Quality of the application (academic excellence, research aptitude, and research topic consistent with the Institute for Intelligence and Data’s focus areas).

- The scholarship is intended to supplement, not replace, the funding usually provided by the supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular researcher member of the IID or by scholarships of excellence
- One of the conditions for obtaining the scholarship is to demonstrate satisfactorily that the scholarship is essential to undertake or continue graduate studies in artificial intelligence or data science
- The review committee may request additional verification and clarification to establish the applicant’s financial situation
NOTE: In the semester following receipt of the scholarship, the student must provide a follow-up letter (max. 2 pages) indicating how the scholarship has helped them in the pursuit of their studies.

Scholarship for exemption from additional tuition fees in artificial intelligence (3 sessions)
Objective
To offer an exemption from additional tuition fees, up to an annual amount of $20,000, for international students who are beginning or continuing graduate studies in a field involving artificial intelligence or data science. The exemption allows them to avoid paying the usual lump sum fee. Students who receive this scholarship will therefore pay the same tuition fees as Quebec students.

International students beginning or continuing graduate studies (all programs)

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:
- Have started (or plan to start) a graduate program relevant to artificial intelligence or data science between January 2026 and January 2027 (full-time or “deemed full-time” enrollment)
- Not be enrolled in the Professional Master’s in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (MIIA)
- Be supervised or co-supervised (or plan to be supervised or co-supervised) by a professor active in artificial intelligence or data science who is a regular research member of the Institut intelligence et données (IID)
- Provide proof of exemption request to your country of origin (only for candidates from countries that have an agreement with Quebec—see the list of signatory countries)
- Receive (or plan to receive) financial support of at least $15,000/year from supervisor grants, excellence scholarships, or any other external support sufficient to cover usual living expenses
- Be an international student who does not have access to other forms of additional tuition fee exemptions.
This scholarship is reserved for international students who are not eligible for other exemptions from additional tuition fees.
Please note that students with visiting student status are not eligible for this scholarship.
Selection criteria
- Quality of the application (academic excellence, research aptitude, and research topic aligned with the IID’s focus areas)
- Proof of citizenship of a foreign country
Comments
- The scholarship will be conditional on the program starting no later than January 2027
- The scholarship will cover the amount corresponding to the increase in tuition fees for a period of one year from the start date, up to a maximum of $20,000
- The scholarship can only be awarded once to the same person
The scholarship does not apply in the following situations
- You are or become a scholarship recipient of an organization that covers your tuition fees for the same year that will be covered by the scholarship offered by the IID
- You officially obtain “permanent resident” status in Canada
- You are enrolled part-time
- You are enrolled as an auditor or in off-campus study activities

IID Excellence Scholarship for International Research Internships – Summer 2027
Objective
This scholarship aims to provide international students enrolled in a graduate program (Master 1 or Master 2) or in the penultimate or final year of an engineering program the opportunity to gain academic research experience in artificial intelligence or data science through a research internship at Université Laval, beginning in spring 2027.
Amount
$4,500 for the duration of the internship (number of available scholarships may vary).
An equivalent contribution of $4,500 must be demonstrated and may come from the IID internship supervisor and/or the student’s home institution.

- November 25, 2026
Eligible Students
International students (from all programs) who are currently:
Enrolled in a graduate program (Master 1 or Master 2), or
In the penultimate or final year of an engineering program
Frequency
Offered annually (subject to availability of funds).
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the IID International Research Internship Scholarship, applicants must:
Be enrolled at a recognized university outside Canada in a graduate (Master 1 or Master 2) or engineering (penultimate or final year) program;
Plan to complete a full-time (35 hours/week) research internship in artificial intelligence or data science lasting 4 to 6 consecutive months, starting between March 1 and June 30, 2027 (before July 2027);
Not hold other full-time employment during the internship period;
Be supervised by a Université Laval professor active in artificial intelligence or data science and a regular research member of the Institute Intelligence and Data (IID), who will provide a safe, supportive environment and close supervision throughout the internship.
Selection Criteria
Quality of the application (academic excellence and research ability);
Quality and relevance of the proposed research internship project;
Alignment of the research topic with the IID’s areas of activity.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit the following documents:
Official university transcripts, including the most recent;
Detailed curriculum vitae;
Letter from the IID supervisor or co-supervisor (regular research member) including:
Evidence of the student’s academic and research excellence;
A brief description (maximum 500 words) of the research project and its relevance to IID’s areas of activity;
A financial plan demonstrating funding of at least $4,500 for the student during the internship, in addition to the IID scholarship, including the supervisor’s financial commitment;
Any other document certifying financial support from sources other than the supervisor’s funds.
