Fall 2020 IID webinars: a great opportunity to connect with artificial intelligence
From September 4 to December 4, 2020, eight webinars will be presented by IID (Institute Intelligence and Data) of Université Laval, as part of its fall programming. Offered free of charge, open to all, these conferences represent a great opportunity to become familiar with the field of artificial intelligence and its principles, challenges, methods and applications.
“The objective of this series is to offer a wide variety of subjects and themes, accessible to novices as well as to more experienced individuals, and to offer them a better understanding of the technologies, challenges and possibilities associated with AI as well as data science,” explains Schallum Pierre, the IID Scientific and Ethics Officer who organized this series of webinars.
Each of the webinars is approximately one hour in length, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and includes a keynote presentation followed by a question and answer period. These will be offered simultaneously on the Zoom and YouTube platforms – and registration, through Eventbrite, is recommended.
Overview of the fall program
Several webinars will focus on ethical and legal issues related to artificial intelligence.
Thus, on October 2, Schallum Pierre will give his presentation “Data ethics, from a research point of view”. On November 6, Simon-Pierre Diamond, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations at Element AI, will present data trusts, a legal vehicle to restore the balance between the protection of personal data and the rise of artificial intelligence. Finally, on December 4, Professor Philippe Després, from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, will explain the FAIR principles for research data management and stewardship.
Other proposed activities will provide an introduction to AI and related approaches.
In this respect, Julien Laumônier will begin on September 18 by giving, for a second time, his presentation “Artificial intelligence, possibilities and reality”, detailing the basic principles of AI, a presentation which has already attracted more than 500 people.
Ph.D. students Nicolas Garneau and David Beauchemin will successively present, on October 16 and 30, an “Introduction to automatic natural language processing” (NLP) and an introduction to “Reproducibility in machine learning”.
“These conferences aim to offer an introduction to these fields and applications; no prior knowledge is required to attend and gain a basic understanding of the field!”, confirms Schallum Pierre.
Finally, on September 4, Camille Besse from IID will give a present the Master’s program in Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence offered at Université Laval, both for future students wishing to participate in this training program and for entrepreneurs wishing to offer an internship to the students. Professor Jacques Corbeil, from the Faculty of Medicine, will give a presentation on the contribution of AI to research in the field of health – “The Omics-sciences and machine learning”.
