The internship in a business or organization, how it works and its conditions
Artificial intelligence is an emerging discipline. The expertise associated with it is rare, present only in a few companies. The aim of the internships associated with the Professional Master’s degree in Computer Science – AI offered at Université Laval is to support and encourage the transfer of expertise from the university to companies or organizations, both to enable the emergence of prospective or applied collaborations, and to help vitalize the regional ecosystem by rapidly training numerous experts.
In addition to supervision by the company, each internship is accompanied and supervised by a research professional associated with the Institut intelligence et données (IID), for one day a week for the duration of the internship, financed by Mitacs flexible funds.
These are compulsory end-of-program internships:
- 21 credits organized into two courses;
- 6 out of 8 courses must be completed beforehand;
- Requires a minimum B- average.
This is an internship spread over two sessions (8 months):
- 80% on-the-job training over 6 months.
- One day a week on the ULaval campus for scientific supervision.
- Preparation of the final report over 2 months.
The internship corresponds to the final assessment of the Master’s degree:
- Final report evaluated by one or more professors;
- Report must include technical and scientific aspects.
Internship financing model
- A contribution of $15k + tx per internship is requested from the company;
- A $20k bursary is offered to each intern;
- Mitacs matching covers the cost of supervising and supporting research professionals.
The grant application associated with the internship is prepared by a research professional with the selected internship projects, after discussion with the company. Each organization is contacted individually to define and refine the project, which is then submitted to Mitacs one or two months before it is due to begin, in order, among other things, to secure funding for the student, as well as to carry out an ethical assessment, if required.
