Insurance data mining: techniques, ethics and security

The Canadian insurance company La Capitale Assurance et Services Financiers has accumulated several massive databases concerning their clients in their various insurance programs. They are currently looking for a way to leverage this data to better understand their customers, and thereby tailor the insurance products they offer to the needs of each individual.

The Canadian insurance company La Capitale Assurance et Services Financiers has accumulated several massive databases concerning their clients in their various insurance programs. They are currently looking for a way to leverage this data to better understand their customers, and thereby tailor the insurance product they offer to the needs of each individual.

This must be done in accordance with strict ethical standards and the constraints that users themselves may want to place on the use of their data. And, considering the personal nature of the information obtained on each individual, data security must be extremely robust.

This research program therefore includes the three following fundamental research thrusts:

1

The data mining thrust aims to develop new algorithms to infer customer information from data from interactions with the company.

2

The ethics and social acceptability thrust examines clients’ expectations of this data mining, both in terms of the benefits they may want to derive and the protection of their privacy.

3

The data security thrust is developing new techniques to guarantee the confidentiality, integrity, availability, and traceability of this data.

The insurance industry is worth billions of dollars to the Canadian economy, and the majority of Canadians greatly value the protection of personal information. The information management and knowledge discovery tools that we are developing will give Canadian companies a significant advantage in this competitive international market, while guaranteeing Canadians control and protection of their personal data.
