A look at research and innovation in artificial intelligence and data science at Université Laval
From applied or fundamental research, including major ethical issues, IID members, collaborators and associate researchers are actively working today on the development of methods, technologies and practices that will support the Quebec of tomorrow.
Large collaborative projects supported and overseen by IID (Institute Intelligence and Data)
IID (Institute Intelligence and Data) oversees various large-scale projects, carried out in a resolutely interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary spirit and, very often, in collaboration with industrial partners. These projects, often bringing together large research teams and touching on various fields, are directly supported by the administrative team of the Institute.
AI in Insurance
IID’s research teams are involved in a number of initiatives in the insurance sector.
These include an ambitious research program in collaboration with Intact Insurance, on the use of massive data and artificial intelligence in insurance and its impact on business processes. These initiatives enable us to develop, test and implement new AI-based technological tools in this important field.
Applied AI
Working with real-world data, based on real-life cases, AI research at Université Laval places a premium on applied artificial intelligence.
As part of various industrial collaborations, several of our data scientists are working to anchor AI innovation in companies in fields such as digital vision, sustainable transportation and nutrition – not to mention the many collaborative research projects carried out directly by our member researchers and collaborators.
AI Explicability
IID and Université Laval are hosting the major DEEL-Québec initiative, in which 25 researchers from five Quebec universities will be working alongside four of Quebec’s leading aerospace companies, with support from CRIAQ and IVADO.
They will be working on AI certification issues and the development of robust, explainable AI within critical systems applied to the aerospace industry.
Artificial intelligence adoption
The Intelligence and Data Institute team is well aware that not all companies and organizations are at the same stage of embracing artificial intelligence. Some have a high level of maturity, while others are just beginning to think about the use of these tools.
To support the development of AI capacity at regional and provincial levels, our team has developed concrete expertise in AI transformation and adoption. Through a step-by-step approach, our teams are able to collaborate with any business and organization, regardless of its degree of AI maturity.
As of April 2024, nearly 150 companies and organizations have worked with our team.
AI capability assessment
In collaboration with the Quebec Innovation Council, the Intelligence and Data Institute has developed an online self-diagnostic tool to assess your operational capacity to adopt and integrate AI.
AI transformation workshops
Our team of data scientists has developed a workshop formula, alternating presentations, discussions and serious games, to provide companies and organizations with a solid foundation to begin their AI thinking.
Customized support approach
Through the NRC-led IRAP program, the Intelligence and Data Institute offers support to companies and organizations in the greater Quebec City and Lévis regions as they take their first steps towards AI.
Short-term AI projects
As part of the internship program for the Professional Master’s in Computer Science – AI, students must complete an eight-month internship, funded in collaboration with Mitacs and carried out with the support of IID.
Collaborative research projects
The IID is a privileged gateway for companies and organizations wishing to collaborate with academia. Our experience in this field guarantees a solid foundation for joint work.
Some short-terme AI projects showcased
In this “showcase of AI projects”, discover some of the 137 internships (as of April 2024) completed as part of the Professional Master’s degree in Computer Science – AI. These are examples of short projects, carried out over an eight-month period by a student, with the support of an IID data scientist. In some cases, these are the first steps towards AI for an organization, while for others, these projects are R&D or business development opportunities.
